Located on the Tohono O’odham Nation’s reservation land in Yuma, Arizona, the Maverick Casino is a prominent gaming destination that caters to visitors and locals alike. As one of several Native American-owned casinos Maverick operating within state lines, it operates under the jurisdiction of both tribal authorities and state law.
History
The construction of the Maverick Casino began in 1992 on land originally acquired by the Tohono O’odham Nation from its original occupants for less than $15 million. The operation was then privatized through a complex web of financing agreements, with large sections owned by various investors and small equity holders. After two years, it eventually opened to patrons seeking Las Vegas-style gaming opportunities in Arizona.
Operations
Maverick Casino occupies more than 34 acres along the reservation’s outskirts and spans nearly one million square feet when counting its parking lots, service areas, and construction yards combined. Over 70% of this space houses operational components like poker rooms, card tables for craps or roulette betting, slot machines and their electrical networks, restaurants serving Mexican or American cuisine, bingo facilities that sometimes run from early morning till the night before.
Native American Gaming Laws
In Arizona, casinos operated on Native American lands fall under state laws allowing those businesses located directly in tribal jurisdictions. These ‘exemptions’ are also tied closely with both federal gaming law permitting limited betting options within states while maintaining specific regulations set by regional councils or even individual nations when needed.
As such there currently exist eight more reservations outside Phoenix which run their own respective casinos besides the one at Yuma that provide similar benefits such as an expanded job base as well as attracting non-local visitor demographics seeking entertainment through poker games or free slot machine sessions among other leisure activities.
